An early pair of Robert “Mouseman” Thompson Oak Monk”™s Chair.
One with curved adzed back carved with the devil showing protruding tongue and the other with the village idiot. The splats carved as three griddle panels- the central one carved with The York Coat of Arms.
Leather seat. On four octagonal legs joined by a cross stretcher.

The other with curved back of adzed form carved with a Monk”™s head and a cloistered silent-order Nun.

The chairs have the Ampleforth grid iron styled side and back panels, interwoven leather seats and the indentation from the lathe centres to the bottom of the legs. Earle octagonal legs were spun on the lathe prior to being tooled by hand to form their octagonal shape. The Ampleforth grid iron was used on early monks chairs prior to the interwoven lattice ones, still used today. The early lattice panels had ½” square holes whereas the ones today have ¾” holes, this adjustment made the panel simpler to carve.
The chairs were most likely given to the Church by a private individual or religious organisation who purchased them by Robert Thompson in the 1930″™s
