Rutherford along with Lowry was part of the Northern School of Artists that depicted the Post Industrial landscape of Northern England. He was also heavily influenced by Walter Sickert, who taught the artist during the 1920’s, this can be seen in the “Twilight” tone of much of his work. Eventually Rutherford moved to Newlyn in Cornwall, where he worked alongside Dod and Ernest Proctor. His works are in public collections including the Royal Academy, Manchester Art Gallery, The Atkinson Gallery, Gallery Oldham and Rochdale Art Gallery
