A superb Walnut and Thuya Display Sideboard by GILLOWS to the designs of BRUCE TALBERT. With inlaid details, carving and highlights and doors with neo-classical pannels and a spindle gallery to the base.
English, circa 1877.
This Cabinet is almost identical to 10233 sketched on 21st August 1877 in Gillow Estimate Sketchbook even to the painting panels costing 1-15-0, total cost was 27-0-6d. Made by B Braithwaite for the 1st floor of the Grand Midland Hotel at St Pancras.

Bruce Talbert (1838- 1881) was one of the most influential designers of the Aesthetic period. Demand for Talbert's designs increased. He was a commercial designer and very talented at absorbing the shifting changes of the public taste.
He was very at home with the aesthetic design which involves ebonized wood, carving and painted furniture. He was extremely involved in the design of Gillows furniture in this period and created a number of pieces for the Gillows stand at the Great Exhibition in 1872.
