Gordon Russell was born in 1892. His family took over the Lygon Arms in Broadway and Gordon trained to work restoring furniture for the building. In the early 20s they were producing very much in the Arts and Crafts style. With time they became very much influenced by machinery- producing more utilitarian furniture.. In 1940 Gordon Russell became Royal Designer for Industry and took part in major exhibitions such as Britain Can Make It and Festival of Britain. He became Director of the Council of Industrial Design in 1943. In 1955 he was knighted.
