The Holly Johnson Antiques team very much enjoyed their recent visit to the awe-inspiring workshop of luxury custom-made lighting and furniture brand, Porta Romana.

Growing from a small London workshop to designing iconic pieces for countless homes, galleries, hotels, yachts, and film sets, Porta Romana handmakes bespoke luxury lighting, furniture and mirrors using innovative techniques and materials.

At the heart of Porta Romana is its workshop in Farnham, Surrey, where beautiful lamps, coffee tables, mirrors, and more are created by highly skilled craftsmen. Every piece is handmade in Britain, by local glassblowers, ceramicists, metalworkers and sculptors.

During their workshop tour, Holly Johnson Antiques had the honour of witnessing exceptional artisans from across the British Isles hard at work bringing metal, wood, and marble to life by turning them into unique pieces for customers to love for a lifetime. All Porta Romana items are made to order and are infinitely customisable – meaning it is easy to match perfectly with an existing interior design style – and Holly and the team were able to witness first-hand the individual custom finishes being carefully applied to each piece. From fabrics to finishes, every little detail can be tailored to your preference and the possibilities are endless. Tables can be topped with marble, glass, oak, lacquer or faux limestone, and lampshades can be customised by shape, fabric, lining and even trim. All painted pieces are available in any finish you like, or you can choose from the Porta Romana library, ranging from rich, opulent golds to highly burnished silvers and everything in between.

The business also has a strong focus on eco-friendly processes and is firmly committed to minimising its environmental impact, implementing sustainable practices across its production, packaging, materials, energy consumption and more. 80% of its range is made no more than 45 miles from its Farnham head office, and switching to LED lighting has enabled the business to reduce its energy consumption by 75%. Efforts are made to use more sustainable materials, including switching to recycled corn-starch for any 3D-printing.

Expanding its hand-picked selection of home furnishings, Holly Johnson Antiques now has on display in the showroom a selection of Porta Romana luxury lighting, including the Baobab lamp with Fez lampshade, the Moons lamp in Plaster White, and the striking Duck Feet Lamp in Decayed Gold with white Duck feathers.

The Porta Romana Stanley Console Table is also a stunning new addition available to view in the Holly Johnson Antiques showroom, with a stand-out ‘Rosso Levanto’ marble top.

Customers can take inspiration from the Porta Romana items on display at Holly Johnson Antiques to create their own bespoke and totally unique product that is made-to-order for their interior. Not sure where to start? The showroom’s in-house interior designers are on hand to help, and can advise customers on what finishes and fabrics to choose to fit their existing interiors.

Holly Johnson, Founder of Holly Johnson Antiques commented: “We are thrilled to announce that we are now proud stockists of British brand Porta Romana. Boasting meticulous craftsmanship, each and every piece is handmade and crafted to last a lifetime. Often, we have customers that love a particular piece, but would prefer a different finish, colour or fabric, and we are now able to offer something that is totally bespoke to individual preference and interior design styling. An added benefit on top of this, is that with everything being made in Britain, Porta Romana lead times are very short in comparison to the lengthy lead times of made-to-order items produced by luxury companies based overseas.”

Holly continued: “Porta Romana takes sustainability as seriously as its craft, and it is exciting to have an option for customers who are conscious of their environmental impact. We are also pleased to be able to offer customers a refurbishment and part exchange service through the brand’s ‘Upcycling Club’, which enables customers to love their favourite pieces for longer, or part exchange for an entirely new product.”
