Ettore Sottsass is one of our favourite designers, his distinct use of colour and bold use of shapes, elevates the everyday to the avant-garde. He spearheaded the design collective, Memphis-Milano in the 1980″s, alongside the artistic direction of Barbara Radice.
In December 1980, Memphis was born when a group of designers got together in Sottsass”s small Milan apartment. Their first collection consisted of 55 products, exploring a new design aesthetic which mixed elegance and quirk, abstract shapes and materials. Their design language has pioneered a cultural movement, continuing to influence and inspire to this day.
We are beyond thrilled to have three distinctly unique Memphis pieces within our collection. The “Ashoka” table lamp by Ettore Sottsass (£3,900), the “Oceanic” table lamp by Michele de Lucchi (£3,700) and the “Super” table lamp by Martine Bedin (£3,200).
“Ashoka” Table Lamp
The “Ashoka” table lamp is one of several lamp designs produced by Ettore Sottsass for Memphis. In form this is the closest to the “cactus” or “totem” design language of some of his furniture.
Sottsass often chose names which referred to his interest in ancient legend and ritual. He travelled to India in the 1960s, which had a crucial influence on his work. This lamp is named for Ashoka, after an ancient Indian emperor.
“Oceanic” Table Lamp
Michele De Lucchi is an Italian designer and architect; he joined the Memphis group in the 1980″s and designed a range of hugely successfully pieces. Including the “Oceanic” table lamp, which resembles a whimsical ocean creature.
“Super” Table Lamp
Martine Bedin was a founding member of the Memphis group. Bedin”s Super Lamp can be trailed along like a dog on a leash, demonstrating the collective”s playful style. Produced as part of the group”s first exhibition, the design champions the bold shapes and vibrant palette of Postmodernism.
